Environmental:
The environment in which we live has a significant impact on our health and vitality. As a result, changes to the environment can have rapid and long lasting effects on individuals and entire populations. The increasing number of potentially harmful pollutants and microbes in the environment calls for fast and cost effective analytical techniques to be developed.
Biosensors have been developed, inter alia, to detect PCBs, dioxins, polyphenols and surfactants, however, there still remains a wide variety of non-regulated chemicals such as those found in pharmaceuticals , flame retardants, steroid and hormones.
Because of the immediate impact these pollutants have on human and animal heath and their propensity to enter the food chain and concentrate, their detection requires a rapid cost effective and portable platform to perform field analysis at the source of sample extraction.
In addition to industrial pollutants and chemicals harmful microbes such as certain E. coli variants can contaminate drinking supplies rapid detection of which is crucial to prevent outbreaks of serious infection and disease.
It is expected that biosensors will play a significant role as a platform ideally suited to environmental assessment and subsequent decision making.
