Medical Diagnostics:
Point of care (PoC) testing has garnering a significant amount of interest from the medical profession and diagnostic companies.
PoC is a term given to patient sample analysis at the point of sample extraction such as a patient bedside or doctor’s office. The main advantage to PoC testing is speed of result allowing the doctor to make a rapid diagnosis and immediately initiate a course of therapy or alter the prescription as required. It is also useful in a triage setting and significantly reduces both turnaround times and the number of out patient visits. Typically these tests are done in centralised laboratories using expensive and time consuming techniques and methodologies.
Biosensors are extremely adaptable for use in PoC diagnostics as they can be functionalised to detect a diverse range of clinical disorders and infectious diseases, are cheap to manufacture, are highly sensitive, portable, they can accommodate a wide variety of sample types i.e. saliva, whole blood, serum and operation is typically user friendly with the results easy to interpret.
The most well know and ubiquitous point of care test is for blood glucose determination. However MiCRA has developed sensors for the detection of other disease markers and is in a position to develop further assays depending on the market requirements and need s of our partner industries.
