Veterinary:
The diagnosis and treatment of animal disease is of highly significant economic importance particularly in Ireland where the livestock and blood stock industries contribute significantly to the economy.
While point of care testing is a significant growth market in the area of human diagnostics the principals underpinning the technology are of equal if not greater significance in veterinary diagnostics. The ability of a vet to diagnose on the spot an infectious disease may negate the requirement for herd cull or prolonged farm segregation. Indeed it may impact indirectly on human health by preventing tainted produce entering the food chain.
An equine trainer may be able to rapidly asses the metabolic condition of a race horse in the days prior to a meeting to ensure peak performance.
Animal breeding programs can be controlled and optimised by ascertaining the fertility of an animal or determining if and when conception has occurred.
Currently many markers for the assessment of animal performance and disease require expensive centralised tests that are performed in laboratories located at considerable distances from the site of origin. Biosensors based platforms would enable these tests to be performed on the farm with significant economic benefits for the farmer and veterinarian alike while ensuring a minimum of distress to the animal.
The potential for biosensors in veterinary science is endless and is an area that MiCRA is keen to develop with suitable partners in the areas of animal health and diagnostics.
